Andre Sornay wardrobe in mahogany and white lacquer 1960
This wardrobe was designed and produced by French cabinetmaker and designer André Sornay in the 1960s. A key figure in French modernist furniture, André Sornay is renowned for his innovative approach to cabinetmaking, combining technical ingenuity, functionality and refined minimalist aesthetics.
The wardrobe features a mahogany frame complemented by lacquered panels in white, beige and blue, creating a subtle graphic contrast that is characteristic of 1960s French design. The combination of warm wood and coloured lacquer gives the piece a timeless and elegant appearance.
The front is fitted with six sliding doors, providing easy access while saving space. Behind the doors, the interior is thoughtfully arranged with shelves, a hanging compartment and an integrated shoe rack, offering practical and versatile storage.
The structure is assembled using Sornay's patented "Tigette" system, an innovative construction method developed by the designer himself. This distinctive technique uses visible metal rods to secure the panels to the frame, becoming one of Sornay's signature features and reflecting his pioneering vision of modern furniture production.
Both functional and elegant, this wardrobe perfectly embodies André Sornay's philosophy, where every detail is designed to combine practicality with aesthetic harmony. It would make an ideal addition to a bedroom, dressing room or entrance hall, bringing a refined touch of French mid-century design to any interior.
We particularly appreciate André Sornay's work for its understated lines, intelligent construction and enduring modernity. A true collector's piece, this wardrobe blends effortlessly into both contemporary and eclectic interiors while celebrating one of the great names of twentieth-century French design.
